The Massachusetts Envirothon is an annual regional qualifier for the bi-national Envirothon competition organized by The North American Envirothon Organization between the US and Canada.
Envirothon is a hands-on fieldwork competition that focuses on environmental science and ecology, in context of forestry, soil science, water quality, local wildlife and an announced sustainability theme. Workshops are hosted throughout the year in preparation for contest in May.
The 2017 Sustainability Theme is Agricultural Soil and Water Conservation
Each school sends a team of up to 10 people. Students cycle through 4 eco-stations (forestry, soil, water, wildlife) where they answer 25 written questions through hands-on field work and identification. At the end, the group gives an oral presentation on the annual sustainability topic in relation to the local environment.
